How to get there without a car
It is very simple to go to Hikone Castle.
Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo station to Maibara station. Then take the JR Biwako Line to Hikone station which is only one stop from Maibara station.
Finally, you go down the main street from Hikone station on foot. The castle town is a very walkable town!
However, you need to go up the hill for a long time until the castle after the castle’s main gate. Uff da!

You may hear the song of Hikonyan-Ondo which is the image song of this town with Hikonyan. You will probably fall in love with this character because of this cuteness, but please do not forget that the Hikonyan is truly cute, but that is all. The way you go is truly rough landscape. The enemy would not have invaded here easily at that time.
Don’t be deceived by Hikonyan.
Food around this area
■ At Maibara station ➡ 本マグロと地酒 㐂家(ななや)
Everything is fantastic. I am a big fan of this restaurant. The main food is tuna dishes, but the other food is also fresh and tastes great.
■ At Hikone station ➡ すき焼きうどん にし川
Broth is amazing. I was really relieved to have this Udon noodle. Not too salty, not too sweet, just right taste.

Local specialty from Takashima-City in SHIGA.

This store is well known for Baumkuchen which is a kind of layers cake from German cuisine. The second floor has a cafe space available to eat their homemade cake, but unfortunately the baumkuchen is take-out only.
