How to get there without a car
It is very simple to go to Matsumoto Castle.
Take the JR Shinano Limited Express from Nagoya station to Matsumoto station. Then you walk to the castle from Matsumoto station. That is about it. The entire town is a very walkable landscape. No complaints at all.
When I see this black castle, I really felt excited and hurried to go inside.
In addition, you can see many collections of matchlock guns. Some of them are very very heavy. I cannot believe that a person could carry it during a battle.
You can meet and take pictures with period actors in authentic costumes during the daytime. They are called “松本城おもてなし隊.” Their mission is to welcome and delight visitors to Matsumoto castle.

I had “Sanzoku-yaki” which is the local culinary specialtiy in Nagano. Look at that! It is a big fried chicken cutlet. Crispy and flavorful. You can also choose half size for a smaller portion.

One of my favorite things during the trip is to go to the local supermarket. Local yogurt, local fruit juice, fresh bread, etc. Nagano produces lots of fruit, so you can get different kinds of jam, too!
■Strawberry picking ➡ 浅間温泉わいわい広場 音泉いちごハウス
Good experience for fresh strawberry picking during waiting for the bus. Peaceful music is playing inside the greenhouse. Probably the music is for the strawberries and farmers. What a nice place.
